You are a Beloved Child of God!

Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us

that we may be called the children of God.

(1 John 3:1)

I am concerned that not many people believe they are beloved children of God. I am afraid that people listen to the negative messages of this world rather than the loving messages of God through the words of Christ Jesus. Our world tells us “You are not good enough unless . . . you get good grades in school . . . you go to college and get a degree . . . you are successful, make lots of money, have a large house, a nice car, and lots of stuff . . .” We may even hear these messages from our family and friends. Whether or not they know it, they may be conveying messages of “Why can’t you be more of what I expect you to be?”

God speaks to us, God’s children, in a much different way. God tells us “I created and formed you, you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1). God loved us into being. It doesn’t matter what we’ve done or failed to do, God loves us unconditionally just as we are.

We need to listen to God’s words. We need to believe God’s words. In this way, our lives will be transformed. When we realize and believe that we truly are beloved children of God and that God loves us beyond measure, will be able to allow God’s love to flow through us to touch the hearts and lives of others. Love will change the world.

Meditate on God’s love for you. Pray 1 John 3:1 again and again. Invite God to open your heart to realize God’s love for you by reflecting on these questions.

  • What feelings does knowing you are a beloved child of God evoke in you?

  • Do you truly believe that you are a child of God, that God loves you as God’s own beloved?

  • If you don’t truly believe this, why don’t you believe it? What negative messages do you need to block to allow God’s love to envelop your heart and mind more fully?

  • What difference does knowing you are a beloved child of God make in the way you are living your life?

  • How does knowing you are a beloved child of God affect the way you engage with other people knowing that they, too, are children of God?

YOU are a beloved child of God! God loves you as God’s own beloved!
